This Tech Tips video will show you how to properly adjust the vertical rods and strike on a Jackson 12 exit device for smooth and reliable operation.
Step 1: Push the push pad and observe the lifting member — it should lift the vertical rods to release the door.
Step 2: Adjust the push pad so that when pressed, the lifting member reaches a parallel position. This is all that’s needed for proper door release.
Step 3: Focus adjustments on the vertical rods and strike set to ensure they align and function correctly — extra push pad motion beyond parallel is not necessary.
Step 4: Check for slight motion or “slop” in the device when activated — this is normal and won’t affect proper door release as long as the lifting member reaches parallel.
Step 5: Inspect the top latch to ensure it drops down when fired, stays inside the door during opening, and springs back up when the door closes and hits the retention keeper.
Step 6: Verify that the correct strike is installed (the one with the bump or “bubble strike”) — this strike pushes the rods into the door as it releases.
Step 7: Confirm that pressing the push pad (or motor retraction) at least 60% activates the strike, allowing the rods to slide, push into the door, and stay retracted until they hit the keeper and spring back.
